Ya!!! Above is my final project map ^_^
I am glad that it turned out to be very nice!As you can see,I made a tourist map for my famous,lovely hometown - Sichuan,which is located in the southwestern part of China.
In fact, this final map is quite different from other previous map makings, instead of duplicating what I have done before, I tried to make a tourist map for the first time.I also made all the text on the map both English and Chinese, besides, I made the graphic scales in different units regarding the different conventional use of Americans and Chinese. I hope you all like it! AND, IMPORTANTLY, WELCOME TO SICHUAN, CHINA!!!

Major data source(including the text) is from Travel China Guide-City Guide-Chengdu.

Other sources:
I retrieved the base map for Sichuan as well as the inset map from Sichuan Youth Tourist Agency, China.
I got most of my photos from Travel China Guide-City Guide-Chengdu. I also got some other photos from 2007 World Cultural and Natural Heritage Exposition, Shenyang, China. and Net Ease Travel.

I got my map scale according to the calculation based on the map scale offered by Zhongding Tourist Agency.

My final lab Image is here. I tried to make the design of it stand out more.

I am glad with the result. I feel happy that at this point I am able to use almost all

what I have learned from class to make my better and better quality map.

However, I just realized that the symbol sizes seem a little over proportional to the county base :(

Colorful China!

This is a map of China in colors!

It looks lovely to me~~~
But all the other countries being in kind of the dark green color is boring and not really clarified.

Since myself now have experience in comparing the digital version and the printed copy...I start wondering that if it is possible that the printed copy of this map looks more vivid, vibrant ~~~

Lab 9! ~The color version of my choropleth map~

I've also got one printed copy of this map. As I tried to compare and contrast the two versions, I honestly did not see much significant difference between the two; however, the printed copy does seem more vivid, I mean the colors are more saturated, vibrant or I would say they seem darker in comparison with the web version on the monitor. So, it's a little disappointing that the color for Alaska seems almost faded to white in the digital version shown above; however, the color in the printed one turns out to be quite nice...so light yellow...

Lab 8! ~Proportional Symbol~

Wow!

I like this lab so much! Although the map is not requested to be in colors, I would like to do it anyway~

The result turns out to be really good. I like the colors I've chosen for this map.

Everything seems nice to me in this one~~~I love it! So cute! ^_^

I chose this one simply because I love the transparency looking of the circles...They are nice!

Lab 7 - My Choropleth Maps!!!

My two choropleth maps!
They are made from the same data however using different classification schemes.

The upper one is Natural Breaks. And the lower one is Equal Interval.
As shown, the visual effects of the two are quite different.

What falls into the same class in the Natural Breaks one; however, is separately shown in different classes in the Equal Interval one.

Map of China again!

This choropleth map is fun! Seen carefully, tiny tiny dots would be found blended within the colors!

Density data is applied properly. That's what is being mapped in the first place definitely!

Besides, possibly different from other choropleth maps, this one shows your addtional information of where major rivers are located!

I like this choropleth map! The color choices are nice!~

Lab6: DOTS!DOTS!DOTS!

MY DOT MAP!!!

Dot maps are cool! They are the best choices to show the geographic patterns of a certain phenomena~

However,

When I really tried to make my own dot map, it was not that fun :(

It took time! A LOT!!!

Still,

I tried to enjoy the process of making it! It was not hard...Patience!!!!!

My lack of the ancillary information of where to put those dots does affect the visuality of the map! This is not cool :(

I got a conclusion:
Ancillary Information of properly putting dots is important! It makes your map much better to show patterns! And it will look better ~

Dot map definitely works well for population density mapping~

Here is a map of my home country China!( A dot represents 50,000 people )

I really like the way how it shows the pattern of population distribution :)

Antique Map of Virginia~

The overall quality of the Antique map of Virginia is quite good!

I like the very "old" looking of this map,

more interestingly,

this map by Hondius shows me more about the "Art" aspect of cartography!~~~

Lab 5!!!

我的天啊！

Oh, My gosh! This lab definitely got me!~~~

Initially, I expected this lab to be easy; however, it turned out to be quite frustrating~

It even took me a long time to figure out how to get the two files together in order to overlap

them!!!

Also, the sublayers of the new layer I created and the states layer were really driving me crazy.

It also took me a long long time to figure out how to make fill of the states with white color, how

to type the labels on the right layer was also hard for me to figure out.

Anyway, this lab was definitely time-consuming for me!!!

But most importantly,

I am still satisfied with the final vision of it!

It looks nice~~~

A nice typography map!!!

I picked this map because I think it is a neat map of South America.

The typography of this map is especially attractive due to its nice fonts and beautiful colors.

The country names are large so that they can get attention easily, the kerning of the names is also an attractive asset since it is well displayed across the landmasses.

The water features are generally labeled in blue as well.

Lab 4

This is my lab 4 picture.

I don't think this lab for typography is that hard, however, it does require patience.

Also, the ability to make the right choice of the placement, size, weight of the types is essentially important.

I think this exercise is a great opportunity to get familiar with types - one of the most important elements of map designing and producing. I also feel that I always explore more and more about this software, with more labs coming and focusing on different aspects.
I am glad that I become more and more familiar and skilled about using Adobe Illustrator :)

Lab 3

This is My Lab 3 Picture.

Lab 3 is not that hard to do actually, especially with professor's detailed instructions; however, it definitely requires patience and chariness.

It's easy for me to figure out the scale, it's easy math. All the problems related to math are easy...So glad!

I did have some problems with the Path Type Tool though, it took me a little bit longer to figure out how to move the text along the path.

^_^ I tried my best to make it done well.

I will always try my best in the future assignments and projects as well.

I am so happy that I've found these two maps of my home country China.

Both of them look pretty nice. I bet the projection center must be China.

The first one is more interesting, it gives you the feeling of three-dimensional visual effects. I think it is quite attractive.

And the second one is really sweet: red and yellow. The color of our national flag ~!

Maps are great!

But can be bad too!
They even make me miss home more~~

The three addtional links I got are:
The GMU Blackboard, National Geographic, and American Digital Cartography Inc.

For GMU Blackboard, I think it is quite relevant to our class since it is a place where we can get most information about the class procedure and assignments, etc. It is also a place to exchange information and views between professor and students.

For National Geographic, I just love it too much. It is a perfect combination of Physical and Human Geography. I can get a large amount of information from it. Most significantly, it inspires to care about our wonderful but vulnerable home-the earth.

For American Digital Cartography Inc, I just got it by Google search. I found it useful since it is something interesting to look at when taking future career into consideration. Generally, I view this website as informative and fun.
